Wool Compost is made on a 120-acre family farm in the Lake District fells by farmer Simon Bland and environmental scientist Jane Barker, using wool from their own flock and the Herdwick ‘wool-clip’ of neighbouring hill farmers, including National Trust tenants. As well as helping the growing number of gardeners who want to switch to peat free, the compost finds a novel use for British wool – good news for struggling sheep farmers.  The use of bracken in Wool Compost is also beneficial. The spread of this aggressive, waist-high plant in the Lake District makes grazing difficult and impacts upon native species.

HOW TO USE: Vegetable Patch & Raised Beds – use Wool Compost for Vegetables & Salads to top-dress your veg patch, fill your raised beds or line your potato and bean trenches.

Planting out – plants, seedlings and plugs. To provide the best growing conditions at the roots, simply dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, line the hole with Wool Compost for Vegetables & Salads, dibble and fill in around the roots. Gently tamp then water thoroughly and mulch.

Containers – use directly in your pots, hanging baskets and tubs for established plants and well grown seedlings. Make sure you soak thoroughly with water. The slow release nutrients will mean that you do not have to feed your plants throughout the first season.
